Arkansas takes advantage of “opt-out” provision in ObamaCare

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe

Last week we told you the Arkansas legislature had passed a bill to allow the state to take advantage of an “opt-out” provision in ObamaCare. Yesterday, Gov. Mike Beebe signed “Act 72” into law.

Arkansas joins 20 others states who have taken advantage of one of the few saving graces of ObamaCare. Under the bill, insurers participating in the federal health exchanges established under ObamaCare are now barred from covering abortions, except in the case of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Coverage for abortions would be available through separate supplemental policies.

“We did it,” said Rose Mimms, executive director of Arkansas Right to Life. “HB100 is now Act 72 —- saving pro-life taxpayers from funding abortion on demand in the healthcare exchanges in the Affordable Care Act and saving hundreds if not thousands of lives of unborn children and sparing their mothers the pain and sorrow of abortion paid for by the government! “

Mimms captured an essential truth when she added, “What a chilling message to mothers that the government will pay to kill your child and call it ‘healthcare!’”
