We’ve written about posts on “The Abortioneers” (self-described as discussing “The Ins and Outs and Ups and Downs of Direct Service in the field of abortion care”) several times. Since they are writing for one another, they let their hair down. What they laud, what they link to, even the music they applaud is a window into their souls.
The alternative universe they live in is ruled by the Evil Emperor Ming, the Magnificent. No, wait a minute, that’s Flash Gordon. Their universe is under the thumb of the Misogyny, the decidedly UnMagnificent
Those rascals are everywhere—and on the move- which is why (as the author of today’s post tells us) it’s so important “You, know, there’s some good stuff coming out on the music scene about abortion right now. Good timing. Necessary timing.” They can “soothe ourselves with a music balm” while “we’re still fighting all this misogyny.”
So as our Abortioneeer puts together an abortion playlist, she discover, most of these songs are left over from the 1970s and 1980s! They need some new songs.
So she goes gaga over the late Michael Jackson’s unreleased single “Abortion Papers.” It’s a strange fit. As a reviewer for the Atlantic wrote, “Jackson narrates the track with a strong, passionate vocal. Ironically, the main drawback of the track is its catchiness. It feels a bit strange wanting to dance and sing along to a song about abortion, but that’s exactly what the addictive groove inspires.”
Yes, strange, indeed. BTW: speaking of new music, the song was likely written in the mid-1980s.
I listened to several examples of the “music balm” and found myself (okay, I am easily shocked) put off by the foul language. Beyond that, the constant use of descriptions like “fascists” is a tad off-putting, but especially disheartening are the lyrics that are supposed to be taken a signs of solidarity—“he” will be with her whatever her decision.
Really? The whole thrust of these songs is to leave little room for a life-affirming decision, especially when the listener is told pro-lifers care not an iota about either mother or child. And while to the pro-abortion set, it can be a badge of [dis]honor for the father of the child to accompany the woman to the abortion clinic, often they are very ambivalent about having men hanging around.
The following sums up what I read and heard. The Abortioneer tells the reader that a particular song “needs to be played over and over and over and over. I wish my clinic streamed it through their speakers.” The song is drenched in profanity, paranoia, and political posturing.
For this Abortioneer, the perfect Trifecta.
