From the pro-life perspective, the most important impression you come away from listening to Mitt Romney in an interview aired yesterday on Fox News Sunday was the fairness with which he treated those who disagreed with his pro-life convictions on abortion and the firmness and compassion with which he voiced his own position.
His own viewpoint emphasized what pro-lifers have always espoused. “There are two lives at stake, the child, the unborn child, and the mom,” he told Chris Wallace. “And I care for both of them.”
But if they were able to watch the formal interview with Romney and the more informal joint interview with Romney and his wife, Ann, this might be the first time many tens of millions of people were able to see a full-orbed portrait of Gov. Romney.
What impressions might they come away with? First and foremost that Mr. Romney loves his wife and that his family is of incalculable importance to him.
And you couldn’t miss that Mr. Romney handled the tough questions with grace. And that included both “social” issues, such as abortion, as well as economic issues.
Nor would it escape the viewer’s attention that Mr. Romney is who he is—and is comfortable with that, refusing to try to be someone else-and that he believes the country will come to see him as the man to “get the country back on track.”
And that he genuinely believes that President Obama is running “a campaign of anger and divisiveness. I think his whole campaign he’s been about dividing the American people.”
